Short answer: Splitwise has the biggest feature set, but free users can add only 4 expenses a day, and receipt scanning and currency conversion are Pro features. Tricount is free with no ads and is now part of bunq. Settle Up has free multi-currency, and its Premium can be bought for one whole group. Spliteroo adds AI receipt scanning and item-by-item splits.

Splitwise
Splitwise is the app most groups start with. Its free tier now has a daily expense limit. Its help center says free users "can add up to 4 expenses each day", and the limit resets daily. A tip from Splitwise itself: a friend can add expenses on your behalf.
Splitwise Pro removes the limit and the ads. It also adds receipt scanning with itemization, currency conversion, search, charts and default splits. Transaction import is available in select countries only. Only Pro subscribers can scan or convert, but everyone in the group sees the results.
Pick Splitwise if your friends already use it and you're happy to pay for Pro, or you add only a few expenses a day.

Tricount
Tricount markets itself as "Free. No ads. No limits." and says more than 20 million people use it. It is now part of bunq, and the switch changed several things. According to Tricount's help center:
- Tricount Premium was discontinued with the new app, and former Premium users were offered 6 months of bunq Pro.
- CSV/PDF export, personal mode and sorting were removed. Statistics and saved custom splits are "planned for a future update."
- You can still request an export (CSV or ODF) from support@bunq.com.
- Newly registered users "will also get a bunq account automatically upon signup."
- Tricount supports payment requests and connecting a bunq Card.
Pick Tricount if you want a free, ad-free shared list and don't mind the bunq link-up. If you relied on export, check what the new app offers first.

Settle Up
Settle Up targets travellers, flatmates and couples. Expenses are backed up and visible to every member, and the app "shows who pays next and minimizes the transactions." Its App Store listing says it supports all currencies with real-time exchange rates. Friends can also view a group in their browser through a shared link, without installing the app. CSV export is free.
Premium removes ads and adds receipt photos, categories, recurring and future transactions, payment reminders, bulk exchange-rate editing, Excel export and charts. You can buy it as a personal subscription or as Group Premium, a one-time purchase that covers everyone in one group. Prices differ between the web and app stores, so check the store you buy from.
Pick Settle Up if you travel across currencies on a free plan, or one person wants to pay once for the whole group.
Spliteroo
Spliteroo is built around the receipt. Snap a photo and the AI receipt scan fills in the items, along with tax, discounts and fees such as service charges. Free accounts get limited scan credits, and Pro is unlimited. Then split by item: give each line to the people who had it, or split a single item (a shared bottle, a platter) by percentage.
Each trip has a "Who owes whom" section. The Settle up screen shows "Your settle plan", the payments you need to make or receive. You share a group by link and export to PDF. A friend who only needs one bill can open its link with just a name and phone number, no account, and join that bill as a guest. Multi-currency with live exchange rates is a Pro feature.
Spliteroo can also import your data from Splitwise and Tricount, so you don't start from scratch. There is no CSV import.
Be aware of the limits: the free plan is capped at 10 friends and shows banner ads. Pro (monthly, or a yearly plan shown at a discount) removes them; prices are set in the app stores. Export is PDF only. Spliteroo doesn't move money, so payments happen in your bank or payment app.
Pick Spliteroo if your group eats out or shops together and wants receipts split line by line without typing.
Which should you choose?
- Lots of small daily expenses, no budget: Tricount, or Settle Up's free plan. Splitwise free stops at 4 a day.
- Multi-currency trip on a free plan: Settle Up.
- Restaurant and grocery receipts split per item: Spliteroo.
- Everyone already on Splitwise: stay, and consider Pro.
- Leaving Tricount after the Premium change: import your tricount into Spliteroo (Splitwise imports work too), or request an export from bunq support if you want an archive.
