Can You Split Bills with Zelle? What It Does and What to Pair It With

Zelle moves money between US bank accounts, typically with no fees, but it does not track who owes what. Here is how to split a group bill and still pay by Zelle.

Short answer: Zelle can pay your share, but it can't split a bill for you. Zelle sends money from your bank app to someone's email address or US mobile number, usually with no fees. It has no group expenses, though. Use an expense app to work out who owes whom, then pay each share with Zelle.

What Zelle does well

According to Zelle's FAQ:

  • You send money from your bank's app (or the Zelle app) using the recipient's email address or US mobile number.
  • Zelle typically charges no fees, but check with your bank.
  • Both people need a US bank account.

What Zelle doesn't do

  • No group expenses. The FAQ shows no way to log shared bills, split them or track balances. Each payment is one person to one person.
  • No take-backs. Payments generally can't be reversed. You can only cancel if the recipient hasn't enrolled yet. Zelle advises paying only people you know and trust.
  • US only. Both sides need US bank accounts, which is no help for friends abroad.

How to split a group bill and still pay by Zelle

  1. Log the costs in an expense app. In Spliteroo, create a group, share it by link, and add each expense. A friend without the app can open a bill's link and join that bill as a guest with just a name and phone number. For receipts, the AI receipt scan fills in the items, tax, discounts and fees such as service charges (free accounts get limited credits; Pro is unlimited).
  2. Split it fairly. Split equally, or by item so each person pays for what they had. A shared item can be split by percentage.
  3. Check who owes whom. Open the trip's "Who owes whom" section, or the Settle up screen's "Your settle plan".
  4. Pay by Zelle. Send each amount from your bank app.
  5. Keep a record. Export a PDF of the group's expenses.

When a Zelle alternative makes more sense

  • Everyone has Venmo and splits evenly: Venmo groups split expenses equally, let you adjust shares, and settle with the fewest payments. Groups hold up to 30 members, and everyone needs Venmo.
  • Friends in other countries: Zelle can't reach them. Spliteroo Pro handles multi-currency with live exchange rates, and people pay however works locally.
